KEVIN JORDAN DOMINATES THUNDER MOUNTAIN FOR FIRST VICTORY
(Center Lisle, New York) --- “The Speedsville Speedster” Kevin Jordan used his pole position draw to jump out to the initial lead of the 25-lap Sportsman Modified feature. The original start would be the closest that competitors would get to the Ken Brewer Construction sponsored #22, as Jordan blistered the field en route to the win. The win propelled Jordan to a commanding point lead in the Sportsman division. Randy Brokaw would pilot his #B17 to a season-best runner-up, with Tom Collins third, newcomer Andrew Ferguson fourth, and The Friends of Natural Gas NY #15D of Kyle DeMetro rounding out the top 5. Twelve cars signed in for the division, but a rash of motor issues wreaked havoc on the field, causing a handful of “did not starts”.
The Hurricane Street Stock division at TMRP has become the highlighted division for the first few events this season, with action unrivaled by any other division, speedway, or sport for that matter. Friday evening was no exception to this claim. Waverly’s Gene Sharpsteen would jump out to the early lead as the green flag dropped. Sharpsteen would remain out front while a shuffling of positions happened behind the leader. Brenton Miller, Jason Beebe, Norm Whittemore, and John Hoover traded spots back and forth to the crowd’s delight. With the laps ticking off, Sharpsteen wrestled with an ill-handling racecar, bobbling multiple times off of turn 4, and allowing the field to significantly close the gap. Lap 15 would register as the most significant lap of the night, with Sharpsteen going around and collecting the top 4 cars, handing the lead over to Whittemore, who survived an early race flat to stay on the lead lap. From there on out Whittemore was too strong to get by, garnering his second career victory and first of the 2013 season. Tom Savercool registed a career-best bridesmaid finish, with Sharpsteen 3rd, Miller 4th, and Hoover in 5th. Mike Morse recouped from a blown motor last week to register his first triumph of the season Friday night in the Pure Stock division. Morse stayed out front all race long while fellow competitors waged war behind the #X. Buck Mills would fight back for 2nd, with Shane Brown 3rd, Kevin Garland 4th, and Todd Koegel rounding out the top 5. The Outlaw Mini Sprint division made their first appearance of the season Friday night, with Don Harvey Jr. tallying the win in his potent #44. The class looks to grow, as the division has been infused into the TMRP schedule on a semi-permanent basis. The All Day Entertainment Mini Stock division saw a repeat winner in only their second appearance on the 1/3-mile clay oval. J.R. Bush was once again the class of the field with Tyler Belcher closing in hard on Bush, but running out of time in the 15-lap event. Keith Shay crossed the line in third after fighting motor problems early on in the event, with Alan Blackwell 4th, and “Turbo” Todd Hayward in 5th. Collin Davey went with the skill tactic Friday night, as opposed to lucky, hushing the naysayers and collecting another Sport Compact win in the #Dirty30. Cody Botts saved a hard-fought runner-up finish, with Guy Raymond Jr. 3rd, Brett Neely 4th, and Quinn Shay in 5th. Racing returns on Friday, May 10th with Sportsman Modifieds, Hurricane Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, Mini Stocks, Sport Compacts, and a Pure Stock Powder Puff. Gates open @ 5:00PM, with hot laps rolling onto the track @ 6:30PM, and racing starting @ 7:00PM. Barry Goodband is the official videographer of Thunder Mountain Raceway Park. BRIAN WHITE AND JASON BEEBE CELEBRATE BIRTHDAYS WITH VICTORIES AT THUNDER MOUNTAIN
(Center Lisle, NY) --- Brian White made his return to Thunder Mountain Raceway Park victory lane Friday night with a dominant performance in the Sportsman Modified division. Jason Beebe was the winner in the Hurricane Street Stocks, with Buck Mills Jr. in the Pure Stocks, J.R. Bush in the Mini Stocks, and Collin Davey in the 4-Cylinder Sport Compacts.
White used his pole starting position to jump out to the early advantage in the Sportsman feature event. As he expanded on his lead, teammates Eddie White and Kenny Hammond battled with Kevin Jordan for second and third. The three competitors flip-flopped positions lap after lap, with no clear cut top performer of the bunch. As the lapped wound down, White would sail to the victory in his Hunt’s Auto Service #56, celebrating his 30th birthday with his 30th career Sportsman victory. Eddie White would cross the line second, with Kevin Jordan third, Kenny Hammond fourth, and Randy Chrysler rounding out the top 5. Quantity was slightly down in the Hurricane Street Stock division; however, quality was at an all-time high. A six car battle waged up front for the entire 20 lap feature event. Jason Beebe was the early race leader, but the veteran Gene Sharpsteen put the pressure on Beebe in a hurry, racing to the outside of Beebe and stealing away the lead. Sharpsteen’s advantage would fizzle out quickly also, as Mike Wilbur Sr. raced past Beebe and Sharpsteen to capture the lead. Once out front, Wilbur looked as if he would not be beaten, but his fellow competitors had other ideas. A couple cautions would repack the field and allow for repeated advances on the restarts. These restarts would allow Beebe to recapture his early lead. On the last lap, Brenton Miller dove to the inside of Beebe down the backstretch, but the door shut quickly and Beebe tallied the victory with Miller 2nd, Sharpsteen 3rd, Wilbur 4th, and Don Russell Jr. rounding out the top 5. Beebe’s victory was also in celebration of his recent birthday. Pure Stocks were taken to the green flag by pole sitter Harold Walburn. Walburn would lead the first lap, but he would cough up the lead to Buck Mills, Jr. shortly thereafter. Mills was battling an ill-handling racecar, as post-race inspection revealed a broken left front A-frame on the #18 machine. These handling woes allowed Mike Morse to charge past Mills on the high side. Morse would remain out front until lap 10, as Morse would then expire pit side with apparent problems on the potent #X. That was all she wrote from there on out, with Mills coming home with the win, Todd Koegel in 2nd, Harold Walburn 3rd, Kevin Garland in 4th, and Kristina Whittemore rounding out the top 5. The Mini Stock division made their first appearance of the season Friday night, receiving a late invite to give teams a place to race, with their home track unexpectedly cancelling. Eight cars made the long haul with J.R. Bush capturing the 15-lap victory. Tyler Belcher held on for 2nd, with Alan Blackwell 3rd, Shannon Gresham 4th, and Tim Bush rounding out the top 5. Excitement, drama, heartbreak, and mayhem littered the 20-lap Sport Compact event Friday night @ TMRP. Marcus Wood dominated 18 laps of the feature event until his #51 machine crawled pit side with problems underneath the hood. Rick Sinsabaugh would inherit the lead from there and nearly piloted his ride to victory, breaking a CV shaft 10-feet from the finish line, handing Collin Davey his first career victory. Davey’s win was hard-fought, battling back from a mid-race spin that sent him to the tail of the field. Sinsabaugh would coast to a runner-up finish, with Dusty Corwin making his first appearance of the year and coming home 3rd, Guy Raymond Jr. 4th, and Cody Botts rounding out the top 5. Colorful victory lane in Thunder Mountain opener with White, Green, Brown, and Underwood all winning
(Center Lisle, NY) – Mother Nature put a damper on what was scheduled to be the Thunder Mountain Raceway Park season opener on Friday, April 19th. With the terminal forecast in place, management made the call to lift the lid on Sunday, the only “nice” weather forecast all weekend. Fans were treated to a four class card. “Fast” Eddie White was the victor in the Open Sportsman Modifieds, with Rich Green picking up the Hurricane Street Stock win, George Brown in the Pure Stock division, and Kenny Underwood besting the Sport Compact field. Quantity wasn’t the bragging point of the Open Sportsman division Sunday afternoon. However, quality took the precedent of the stacked six-car field. Five-time returning champion, “Fast” Eddie White, paced the field to the green flag of their 30-lap event with son and teammate, Brian White, going away on his outside. The original start would be the closest any competitors would get to the back deck lid of the Hunt’s Auto Service #20, as White would lead from green to checker. Kevin Jordan motored from his 3rd starting position to come home in the runner-up spot, with Brian White third, Alan Barker fourth, Fran Hilton fifth, and Nick Nye finishing sixth. Race of the night honors would go to the Hurricane Street Stock division, providing fans with side by side, cut-throat action throughout all 20 laps. Doug Stack Sr. brought the field to the green and immediately powered out to a commanding lead. Behind Stack, Ryan Stone, Brenton Miller, Earl Zimmer, and Norm Whittemore swapped paint and exchanged positions tirelessly. Finally by lap 10, Stone reeled in the Stack machine and was able to complete the pass for the lead. With Stone out front, Rich Green found himself in an uneasy second, with Zimmer, Stack, and Miller still exchanging positions. Lap 19 would be scored the first lap led for the potent 3L of Green, as he was able to complete the winning pass out of turn 4, as Stone was fighting a tight racecar. The victory marked the second straight year of Green winning the opener. Stone would hang on for second, with Zimmer third, Stack fourth, and Miller rounding out the top five. Harold Walburn brought the Pure Stock division to the green flag Sunday afternoon, and would remain out front for the first four laps. With Walburn out front, division front-runners, George Brown and Buck Mills Jr. charged into the mix, with Brown taking over the top spot on lap five. That was all she wrote from there on out, as Brown dominated the remaining 10 laps, with Mills settling for second, Mike Morse to third, Walburn in fourth, and newcomer TJ Frost rounding out the top five. Fifteen 4-Cylinder Sport Compacts hit the starting grid for their fifteen lap event, with division sophomore Collin Davey pacing the field to the green flag. Davey would tick of the first three laps as the race leader, but veteran Kenny Underwood had other plans this afternoon. Underwood made the winning pass on lap four and set sail for the remainder of the event. Davey would hang onto a career best in the dirty30, with Bob Crandall, Buddy French, and Damien Bausenwein rounding out the top five.
